Directions for using Acid Dyes:
Materials to be dyed should be cleaned of grease and oils. Use any detergent or dish washing liquid. Materials to be dyed should be thoroughly wet before dyeing and should be able to move freely in the dye when stirring. Dye pot should be stainless steel or glass. The dye should be thoroughly dissolved in hot water before adding the material to be dyed. Darker shades need more dye and more time to dye.
Suggested dye bath temperatures:
Loose feathers or fur 120 - 140o Fahrenheit or 49 - 60o Celsius
Feathers or fur on skins 110 - 120o Fahrenheit or 43 - 49o Celsius
Maintain even temperature when dyeing
Dye formulas and procedure:
Feathers - 1 - 5% of dry weight of material. Darker shades and black may need up o 10% dye powder. Vary the percentage to obtain different shades.
1. Measure the volume of water and then heat the dye bath to desired temperature.
2. Dissolve the dye, mix thoroughly in the dye bath.
3. Add material to be dyed and stir thoroughly during the dyeing process.
Allow the dye to color the material for about60 minutes. (Darker shades may take longer). When the material has reached the desired shade (remember wet material appears darker than when dry), add ordinary white vinegar and mix thoroughly into the dye bath. For most colors, add 10% vinegar to the water volume in the dye bath. For example if you used 10 cups of water for your de bath, add cup of vinegar to set the dye. Stir often and allow the dye to set about one hour. Rinse thoroughly until the rinse water is clear. If the color washes away, then leave in the dye bath for a longer time. Rinse any excess dye and dry material.
