ROD BUILDING HINTS
* Always work in a clean well-lighted area.
* Follow directions for rod building and use professional finishes.
* If you have a rod-building question or comment, please give us a call 1 (709)
256-3533 or July and August 1 (709) 635-7106. We enjoy calls, questions, and
suggestions from rod builders.
HELPFUL TIPS FOR A PROFESSIONAL FINISH
* For a professional finish use an epoxy finish.
* If you wish to preserve the thread color, us a color preserver. Two
applications with a one-hour drying time between coats.
* Heat both the containers A and B prior to mixing and application. Do not heat
above 80 o F to 90 o F. On warm days heating will not be necessary.
* Accurately measure equal amounts of Resin A and Hardener B with separate
syringes and place into a non-porous mixing cup.
* To mix the two parts, use rounded non-porous mixing stirrers.
* Mix the two parts slowly (to avoid bubbles) and thoroughly (two minutes or
more) until clear.
PROBLEMS
* If crazing and cracking occurs around the guides become a problem, consider
finishing without first coating the windings with a color preserver.
* To avoid air bubbles, do not mix rapidly. Avoid the use of paper cups, wooden
stirrers. Heat both parts A and B prior to mixing.
* Avoid contamination with Silicone. Silicone in medical syringes. Silicone can
cause the finish to fisheye or separate from the rod blank and wrappings.
* Unequal mix of A and B results in an uncured, "sticky" finish. To
correct, recoat the wraps with a new coating of properly finish. If this does
not work, remove the old finishes, clean, and recoat.
* Yellowing of the finish can result from a reaction of the epoxy finish with a
lacquer-based color preserver, incomplete mixing or unequal portions of A and B.
* If epoxy Resin A crystallizes, restore by heating the resin bottle in hot (not
boiling) water.
* Syringes should not be cleaned, just wiped clean and placed into a separate
storage bag. Keep the plungers of the syringes halfway to prevent sticking.
Clean up all brushes and containers with acetone or lacquer thinner or epoxy
thinner in a well-ventilated area or outdoors.
